ELECTRICAL STIMULATION

WHAT IS IT

Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation is a pivotal component of our therapeutic approach, fostering the development and rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida and other movement disorders. This non-invasive technique involves the application of controlled electrical currents to targeted muscle groups, promoting muscle contractions and enhancing neuromuscular coordination.

Our team is highly trained and certified in the use of Non – Invasive Spinal Stimulation (NISE – Stim) and Task Specific Electrical Stimulation (TASES), used for the purposes of activating severely hypotonic muscles, reducing muscle spasticity, helping with nerve regeneration, improving nerve signal between brain to muscles, and improving strength and sensation.

How It Works

Improved Strength & Motor Control

WHAT IT IS

TASES (Task Specific Electrical Stimulation)

TASES uses precisely timed electrical currents to target specific muscles during functional activities. Instead of stimulating muscles passively, it’s performed while your child is actively moving — for example, reaching, sitting, crawling, or standing. For children with high muscle tone or spasticity, certain muscles may stay “switched on” too long and TASES helps those overactive muscles to relax. This helps the brain and body learn to work together more efficiently, strengthening neural connections through repetition and purposeful movement.

 Ideal Candidates:

  • Children with cerebral palsy or neuromotor disorders
  • Children with spasticity or significant and limiting muscle tightness
  • Hypotonia, muscle weakness, or coordination challenges
  • Decreased control of purposeful limb movement
WHAT IS IT

NISE (Non-Invasive Spinal Electrical Stimulation)

NISE-Stim delivers non-invasive, safe, electrical currents over the spinal cord — helping “wake up” the communication pathways between the brain and body. It stimulates specific sensory nerves that send signals into the spinal cord, which in turn helps the muscles fire. This process is called neuromodulation, and it helps the nervous system learn to send faster, clearer messages to the muscles that control movement.

For children with limited nerve to muscle connection, NISE-Stim improves how effectively those signals travel for immediate effects.

How It Works

How It Helps:
By strengthening the brain–body connection, NISE-Stim can improve:

  • Trunk and core stability
  • Muscle activation
  • Muscle tone regulation
  • Postural alignment and balance
  • Coordination for crawling, standing, and walking

Ideal Candidates:

  • Children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or other neurological disorders
  • Children with weak or inconsistent muscle activation
  • Children with impairments in postural control or mobility
