DYNAMIC MOVEMENT INTERVENTION (DMI)

WHAT IS IT

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)

Dynamic movement intervention is a revolutionary therapeutic technique used in pediatric physical therapy and occupational therapy to treat children with gross motor impairments. DMI has shown significant, immediate improvements in function that pair very well with the intensive model of therapy. This comprehensive intervention incorporates current research on neurorehabilitation, technologies, and methodologies.

DMI therapy focuses on improving sensorimotor processing, and is designed to help children achieve motor inchstones and milestones (eg. sitting, crawling, walking, standing, and transitions between positions), and best suited for children 0-3 years old. DMI can benefit children diagnosed with a motor delay such as; neurological conditions (eg. cerebral palsy, or brain injury), genetic abnormalities, hypotonia, global delays, babies born prematurely.

HOW IT WORKS

Stimulate New Connections in the Brain

Built on evidence-based research in neurorehabilitation, DMI draws on principles of neuroplasticity to stimulate new neuronal connections within the brain. The goal of DMI is to optimize processing of the body’s sensory input to result in automatic performance of motor skills. Seeing a DMI session is often an exciting and new experience for families.

THE BENEFITS

Power of Neuroplasticity

As opposed to traditional therapy, DMI harnesses the power of neuroplasticity and continually sets to optimize brain function. So you’ll see lots of aerial, upside down, and swinging positions. We design exercises to be progressively more challenging, and require your child to do more and more of the skill, with the goal being for your child to perform the skill with as much independence as possible. This allows your child to overcome their impairments, be empowered to move, and succeed in achieving inchstones and milestones!

Benefits of DMI

  • Improves postural alignment
  • Improves muscle strength
  • Improves motor control
  • Improves motor planning
  • Improves sensory integration
  • Improves functional mobility
